The Origin Of The Sunda Strait

The islands of Java and Sumatra were originally told as unified plates, not separated as they are now. In that area, stood a kingdom led by a just and wise king named Prabu Rakata. Prabu has two sons, the oldest Raden Sundana and the youngest Raden Tapabaruna. One day, Prabu conveyed his intention to avoid the frenetic of royal life that no longer attracted his heart. As he was getting old, the King wanted to meet somewhere.

Prabu Rakata considered that his two children were old enough to continue the throne of his kingdom. But Prabu did not want to hand over the throne to one of his sons. Prabu tried to be fair by dividing his territory.

Raden Sundana received part of the eastern kingdom, which is now called Banten. Meanwhile, Raden Tapabaruna received the western part, which is now called Lampung. After the surrender of the throne, Prabu left without bringing much stuff, except for one heirloom jar that faithfully accompanied him while he was king.

At the hermitage, Prabu Rakata honed his wisdom and powers. One day, Prabu was visited by a royal guard who said that his two sons were involved in civil war. His eldest son, Raden Sundana, was reportedly not satisfied with his father's decision to divide the kingdom.

He ignited a feud by attacking the kingdom of his younger brother, Raden Tapabaruna to then seize his power. King was very surprised and willing to join the guards to the war zone.

Raden Sundana and Raden Tapabaruna withdrew their troops when they knew their father had arrived. Prabu was very angry to know the truth of the news conveyed by the guards, especially when he witnessed the actions of the Eldest Son against his younger brother. Prabu invited his son to make peace, and considered a wise way so that the two of them did not attack or dominate each other. Prabu stomped his foot hard on the earth, then suddenly flew off with his urn of the treasure.

Prabu arrived at the edge of a beach, filled his jug with sea water, then flew back to where his two children were. Prabu Rakata ordered his two sons to stand in their respective areas.

Raden Sundana in the east, and Raden Tapabaruna in the west. Prabu stood between his two sons and then flowed the sea water he was carrying in an heirloom jar to the surface of the earth where he stood.

After the water ran out, Prabu put his heritage jar in the middle of the water. A moment later, the earth unexpectedly shook violently. Then the crack split into two plates, the earth's crack continued to extend to the sea to the north and south.

So that the gap between the two plates filled with sea water, and the Sunda Strait was formed. The urn that was placed in the slit gap was transformed into a mountain called Mount Rakata, which is now known as Mount Krakatau.
